Cyprus officially informed the UN Security Council of large-scale violations of air and sea space by Turkey recorded in July and August 2025.
According to data sent to New York, during this period there were 328 violations in the air and 16 incidents at sea, which, according to Nicosia, is further confirmation of a systematic disregard for international law.
The letter from the Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the UN is dated December 8 and was distributed by the President of the Security Council to all its members. The document clarifies that out of 328 air violations, 93 were committed by Turkish military drones, and another 56 by armed fighter jets. The Cypriot authorities emphasize that such actions directly affect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the country.
The letter states that the violations included incursions into national airspace, the Nicosia Flight Inspectorate of Responsibility (FIR), as well as the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus. Separately mentioned is the illegal use of closed ports and airports in the occupied territories of the Cypriot state by Turkish forces.
The Cypriot side also expressed serious concern about the almost daily visits by the Turkish military or associated structures into the UN buffer zone, known as the Green Line. Nicosia names the strengthening of military infrastructure in the occupied territories as an additional factor of tension, regarding this as part of a consistent aggressive policy aimed at creating new fait accomplis on earth.
According to the Cypriot mission, such actions undermine the sense of security of all residents of the island and negatively affect the prospects for resuming the negotiation process on the Cyprus settlement, which has remained stagnant in recent years.
Despite the difficult situation, Cyprus reaffirmed its full commitment to cooperate with the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to create conditions for the resumption of dialogue. The letter emphasizes that Nicosia continues to favor a solution to the Cyprus problem in the form of a bicommunal and bizonal federation with political equality, as provided for in UN resolutions.
The Cypriot side also requested that this letter and accompanying materials be distributed as official documents of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly within the framework of the Cyprus issue, and also included in the documentation of the Security Council. This underscores Nicosia's intention to keep the issue of Turkish violations in the international spotlight and seek a response from the global community.
