On December 4, the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides arrived in Kyiv on a working visit, where he was met by the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky at the Mariinsky Presidential Palace. The visit comes as part of Cyprus' preparations for the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2026.
As government spokesman Konstantinos Letimbiotis emphasized in a statement on social network X, Cyprus supports key European priorities - security, unity and strengthening the common political will.
“This deeply symbolic visit expresses full solidarity with the Ukrainian people and demonstrates an unwavering commitment to the principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of each state,” Letimbiotis said.
He recalled that both peoples are familiar with the tragic consequences of invasion and occupation, with the encroachment on freedom and territorial integrity. That is why the position of Cyprus is based not only on the principles of international law, but also on its own historical experience.
Cyprus, the government spokesman stressed, supports any sincere diplomatic initiative that can lead to a just and lasting peace in full compliance with international law and the UN Charter - and does this in close coordination with European and international partners.
As part of the upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, one of the key priorities will be enlargement policy, where Ukraine's path to full integration into the European family takes center stage.
After the personal meeting of the presidents, extended negotiations began between the delegations of the two countries.
