The Chairman of the European Council Antoniu Costa told the UN Secretary General Antoniu Gutherrish that the EU would not decide on the creation of two states in Cyprus.
He reported this to the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Christodulides after a telephone conversation with the head of the UN.
Sources report that Christodulides held telephone conversations with the chairman of the European Commission Ursula von der Lyain and Antoniu Kosta after a meeting of the National Council in Geneva. According to the Cyprus news agency, von der Lyaine expressed great interest in the results of an informal Cyprus meeting.
Referring to a conversation with Gaterrish, Coshta emphasized that the EU fully supports a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem within the two -zone, double -industrial federation with political equality. This corresponds to resolutions of the UN Security Council, the EU principles and the norms of Acquis Communautaire.
Coshta also stated that Türkiye should adhere to the UN decisions. He noted that stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean are included in the strategic interests of the EU, as well as the existence of independent, peaceful and functional Cyprus in the EU.
Von der Lyain and Kostya sent a joint letter to Gaterrish, expressing the EU desire to actively participate in negotiations on Cyprus settlement. According to the representative of the government of Cyprus Konstantinos Letimbiotis, this step is of great importance, since it emphasizes the importance of the Cyprus issue for the EU and its member states.
As it became known, Julia Berteszolo, head of the Supporting Department for the settlement of the Cyprus problem in the General Director for the regional and city policy of the EU, will prepare a report for the leadership of the Union. She is present in Geneva, representing the EU at informal meetings, and has already negotiated with the Deputy Minister for European Affairs Cyprus Marillie Rauna.
The EU intends to increase the level of its representation in negotiations if the process continues. The Union also maintains internal preparations for the possible renewal of negotiations, coordinating its efforts through the units responsible for relations with Turkey.
The agreed basis of the settlement based on the two -zone, double -breast federation is a key element of the EU approach. This provision is enshrined in the contract on the accession of Cyprus to the EU. In Brussels, they hope that negotiations in Geneva will move forward and open the way for the next meeting.
