On Friday 14 November, thousands of students from all over Cyprus took part in mass demonstrations condemning the illegal declaration of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which marks its 42nd anniversary this year.
The main action took place at the Mia Milia barricade, where hundreds of students from Nicosia gathered from 10:30 am, organized by the student movement PSEM (Pan-Cyprus Student Coordination Committee). Participants held placards and chanted slogans: “Cyprus is united and federal,” “Cyprus belongs to its people,” and “Honor and glory to our heroes.”
Before the demonstration, a rally took place at the Kaymakli market, after which a column of students headed to the Mia Milia checkpoint, where the main event took place.
A separate demonstration was held by the autonomous student movement EFEN. The participants gathered at Eleftheria Square, walked along Nehru Street and arrived at the Ledra Palace checkpoint. The march then continued through the Paphos Gate area and ended at the checkpoint on Ledra Street, where participants also protested against the occupation and division of the island.
