Cyclone Byron is approaching Cyprus. Former head of the meteorological service of the Republic of Cyprus Kleanthis Nikolaidis
believes
that "Byron" will bring more rain to the island than "Adele". However, according to long-term forecasts, winter 2025/2026 will be warm and dry. The former head of the weather service expressed hope that his forecast would be wrong and that the drought-stricken island would receive as much rain as possible.
On the Alpha TV channel, Kleanthis Nikolaidis spoke about “Byron”, which will reach the shores of Cyprus on the night of Saturday, December 6. According to the expert, the new cyclone will bring more rain. There may be wet snow in the Troodos mountains. During Byron's reign, thunderstorms, showers, mini-floods and gale force winds are expected. There may even be a tornado.
Unfavorable weather conditions can cause road problems and flooding, which is caused by a lack of culture to prevent them. Residents of Cyprus have not yet learned to prepare en masse for the arrival of bad weather: they do not clean the collector grids that collect rainwater from debris, and continue to build in places where powerful water flows form during rainstorms.
As Kleanthis Nikolaidis admits, what Cyprus needs is not extreme rainfall that will cause damage, but long-lasting, moderate rainfall that will strengthen the underground aquifer. Water resources in the country remain at very low levels. The reservoirs are only 9.4% filled with fresh water. In the Cypriot forests, trees began to dry out due to drought.
