DIPA member Marinos Musitas on Wednesday, February 12, called on the Committee of the House of Representatives on Legal Affairs to limit the powers of deputies with three consistent terms.
Musitas wants to establish the maximum term of powers for elected deputies, with the exception of leaders. Currently, there are no restrictions on the deadlines. A similar proposal was submitted to the bill by the Anastasiadis government in 2013, but was rejected in 2018.
“At that time, the parliament rejected this proposal,” said Musitetas, noting that the proposal considered today is a continuation of the proposals put forward in the past.
He added that some of the past proposals included the institutionalization of the terms of the powers of mayors, communities and public advisers.
“The purpose of these proposals is to strengthen the authority of the parliament and politicians in the eyes of the public, which often expresses their distrust,” Musittas said.
In conclusion, he added that soon other parties should express their positions, noting that the final approval or deviation is expected by May of this year.
Party deputy Akel Aristos Damian said that his party agrees with the introduction of restriction of the term of office. He came to the conclusion that the discussion will rotate around the determination of the term of office, noting that they should be cumulative, and not consistent.
“If someone has worked out his terms, it does not matter whether he interrupted them or not. Three terms should be considered sufficient. ”
