The leader of the Cypriot Turks Ersin Tatars called on the states of Central Asia to show “great caution” in their relations with the Republic of Cyprus, after the five countries of the region signed a joint declaration with the European Union, which explicitly excludes the possibility of recognizing the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRK).
The joint document signed in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, in early April, confirms the support of UN Security Council resolutions 541 and 550, condemning the proclamation of the independence of TRK and calling for the UN member states not to recognize it. Among the signed are Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Four of these countries are members of the organization of Turkic states (OTG).
Speaking after a meeting with the representative of the Turkish Travel Agencies (Tursab), the Tatars said that the EU "is the opportunity to strengthen communications with the Turkic states to isolate TRK." He urged these countries to act carefully:
“The Turkic states can have relations with the EU and with the Greeks-kypriots, but they must understand that the Greeks-Cypriots lead a different game. We are part of one culture, one language. We need to show solidarity. ”
The Tatars expressed the opinion that the leaders of the Turkic countries may not have “not noticed” the wording of the declaration condemning the North, and emphasized:
“They should be wondering - what consequences these articles can lead to and for whom.”
He added that TRSK will continue to promote the decision by the model of the two states and counts on the support of the Turkic countries, similar to the one that turns out to be the Republic of Cyprus.
The news about the signing of the agreement and the opening of embassies of Central Asian countries in Nicosia caused a wave of criticism in Turkey. The opposition accused the ruling party of justice and development of diplomatic insolvency.
Ayuje Turkes Tash, Deputy Head of the Ei party, said: “TRSK is a red line. Türkiye could not even convince fraternal states of the importance of TRK. This is a diplomatic failure. ”
In turn, the representative of the main opposition republican People’s Party (NRP), Ozgur Karabat accused the government of “turning a blind eye to strengthen the Greek-Kirus Administration”:
“Over 23 years, the PSR authorities could not achieve the recognition of TRK to a single country. Instead of being a player, the government became a statist. ”
He also recalled that Qatar, considered an ally of Turkey, is actively involved in the development of the energy resources of the Eastern Mediterranean in cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus.
Against the backdrop of these events, the international insulation of TRSK seems to intensify, despite Turkey's attempts to promote its recognition through Turkic diplomatic channels.
