On Wednesday, April 16, the mayor of Ankara Mansur Javash said that the “silence” of the Turkish government in response to a joint declaration of five states of Central Asia and the European Cyprus Union created the image of weakness in the foreign policy of Turkey.
According to Javash, a joint declaration signed by Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, causes “deep concern”. Four of these countries, which are members of the organization of Turkic states (OTG), are traditionally considered to be allies of Turkey.
“The fact that our fraternal states are taking such steps, and that their declarations contain statements on the Cyprus issue is an extremely serious and alarming event. The silence of Turkey gives the impression of the weakness of our foreign policy and looks like a conscious choice, ”said Javash.
He noted that this step caused damage to the political status of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRK) and ignored the national interests of Turkey. “We urge the Turkish Republic to take a more decisive diplomatic position and urge fraternal states to reconsider its decision,” he emphasized.
Criticism also sounded from Mukharrem Inja, the leader of the opposition party of Memleket and presidential candidate from the Republican People's Party (CHP) in the 2018 election. Inzhe recalled that under the rule of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), Türkiye was unable to prevent the entry of the Republic of Cyprus to the EU, did not ensure the recognition of TRSK by the Turkic republics and made decisions that characterize Turkey as the occupier in Cyprus.
“The government, which has been in power for 23 years, suffered Fiasco not only in foreign policy, but also in agriculture, education and economics,” he added.
The joint declaration was signed in early April in Samarkand. In it, five countries confirmed their commitment to resolutions of 541 and 550 UN Security Councils, which condemn the proclamation of TRK independence and urge not to recognize this education.
Against the backdrop of criticism, the leader of the Cipriot Turks Ersin Tatars called on the Turkic states to be careful. He expressed the hope that the signing countries “did not notice” the provisions of the declaration regarding Cyprus.
A number of other Turkish politicians also criticized the actions of fraternal states. Ayuja Turkesh Tash, deputy leader of the Ei party, said that Türkiye could not effectively convey its foreign policy position even to the allies. And the deputy chairman of the NRP Ozgur Karabat accused the government of passivity and recalled that for 23 years of AKP TRSK, not a single country was recognized.
Karabat also criticized Turkish relations with Qatar, indicating that Qatari companies are reconnaissance of energy resources in the Eastern Mediterranean in the interests of the Greeks-kypriots.
