On Tuesday, March 18, the UN Secretary General Antoniu Guterres announced to achieve important agreements during an expanded meeting on Cyprus settlement held in Geneva. Among the key results are the opening of four new checkpoints between the two parts of the island.
Guterres also said that the next extended meeting on the Cyprus issue will be held in July in the same format, with the participation of the UN, the Greek and Turkish sides of Cyprus, as well as three countries-guarantees-Greece, Turkey and Great Britain.
Additionally, the parties agreed on the start of new work on the clearance of territories, the creation of the double -breeding technical committee for youth, the launch of environmental protection initiatives, the construction of solar power plants in the buffer zone and the restoration of cemeteries.
According to the results of the meeting, Gutherrish noted “significant progress” and emphasized that negotiations were held in the “new atmosphere” with the “feeling of urgency” manifested by both parties.
The political parties of Cyprus also positively appreciated the results of the meeting. The leader of Disie and the Chairman of the House of Annith Representatives Demetriu called the meeting a “positive step”, they gave a similar assessment in wild, emphasizing that the negotiations took place “despite the tactics of Ankara wires”.
