On Tuesday, March 4, the leader of Turko-Kipriot, Ersin Tatars, confirmed that he intends to run for a second term in the elections planned for October 2025.
“I run for the presidency. I have already made a decision. It is important who will support me ... There is only one path in my mind, ”Tatars said.
The Tatars expects an official decision of the National Unity Party (UBP), which he headed before the election in 2020, on the support of his candidacy. However, he emphasized that, according to the Constitution, after the election, the leader of Turko-kipriot should maintain independence from political parties.
The current leader also stated that during his reign was able to significantly advance his policy.
Tatars are considered one of the main contenders for victory. Its main opponent is the leader of the CTP opposition party and the former Prime Minister Tufan Erhurman.
The Tatars stands for a two -state solution to the Cyprus issue, while Erhurman supports the federation model.
If the Tatars win, he will become the first leader of the Cipriot Turks, re-elected for the second term, after Rauf Denctash, who held the post until 2005.
