The protracted drought put Cyprus in a difficult position: the reservoirs were rapidly empty, and the stock level dropped below 20% of the total capacity.
The State Council for Water Resources made the next emergency call for the population to save water and prevent its irrational use.
The growth of temperature and a wave of heat only exacerbate the crisis, and the demand for water continues to increase. Experts note that under the current conditions of replenishment of reserves, it is not necessary to expect, so each rational decision in everyday life becomes a key contribution to the fight against deficit.
Cyprus legislation provides for strict rules in the conditions of a water crisis. It is forbidden to use hoses for washing cars, sidewalks, verandas and other surfaces. Violators are threatened with serious fines.
“We are implementing a plan of action to combat shortage, but the decisive factor remains the careful and reasonable use of water by every citizen,” the water department emphasizes.
The situation with water is directly related to climate change and a reduction in the amount of precipitation in the region. The authorities are already considering the expansion of the system of desalination plants, which in recent years provide a significant part of the water supply of the island. In addition, the plans include the development of infrastructure for the re -use of purified wastewater in agriculture and landscaping.
Experts warn that if the trend is preserved, in the coming years the island may encounter even more rigid restrictions on water supply and tariff growth.
