Heavy rains in northern Cyprus continue to create a critical situation: one of the hospitals in the occupied part of Nicosia is at risk of flooding.
According to local authorities, the medical facility is located right next to the river bed, where water flows from the Kanli and Kioneli dams - and the water level is already approaching dangerous levels.
District Mayor Mehmet Harmancı told the local news agency that services are on constant alert and emergency evacuation measures will be carried out if necessary. Hospital management is already considering several scenarios for removing patients. The road in front of the medical center is temporarily closed to prevent accidents.
Meanwhile, rescuers evacuated residents of several damaged buildings. A total of four to five cases of flooding of residential buildings have been reported, however, according to local representatives, no other critical incidents have been recorded so far.
Due to the unfavorable weather forecast and the threat of further rainfall, educational institutions in the occupied areas will remain closed. “Minister of Education” Nazim Çavuşoğlu said that all public and private schools are suspended and teachers have been given administrative leave. At the same time, he emphasized that there is no direct threat to schools from damage and there are no problems with the safety of children yet.
