Shocking photos came from the occupied part of Cyrian in Northern Cyprus. According to an eyewitness, who made an appeal to the editors of Sigmalive, during a recent visit to the temple of St. Fanuria, he came across paintings that can hardly be called otherwise than shame and mockery of the Orthodox faith.
The cave under the temple, where, according to legend, St. Fanurius buried his horse before leaving the island, today was turned into a place of complete desolation and disrespect. Holy images are scattered and broken, the walls are written, and traces of drug use and used personal hygiene products were found on the floor. In these conditions, it is impossible to talk either about the preservation of the memory of the saint, or respect for the historical and religious heritage of Cyprus.
An eyewitness who provided information emphasizes that the situation causes not only pain among believers, but also the righteous indignation of the entire Cyprus public. After all, such actions are not just vandalism, but a real abuse of shrine, which for centuries was a symbol of faith, cultural identity and spiritual memory of Greek-kipriots.
The appeal also notes that in the Republic of Cyprus, Muslim religious objects are protected and supported by the state with respect and attention. However, in the territory under the occupation, Christian shrines are abandoned to the mercy of fate, turning into foci of antisocial behavior.
This story is an alarming signal that cannot go unnoticed. It concerns not only the inhabitants of Cyprus, but the entire international public, since it reflects the problem of cultural and spiritual destruction of heritage in the context of political conflict.
Photos from the scene only confirm the scale of the disaster. The author of the appeal calls on public organizations, the media and international structures to pay attention to what is happening and promote the restoration of justice.
