Hurricanes in Cyprus: is it worth panic?

Rains and thunderstorms, hurricanes and tornado are not so rare for Cyprus. The island regularly finds himself in the power of strong wind, rainfall with hail, tornadoes over the sea and land. Here is a list of the most remembered natural disasters.

 December 9, 1962

December 1962 went down in the history of Cyprus as a month of destructive storm, which covered Kerinia. The tornado was formed from a thunderstorm cloud hanging over the sea, and reached the ground at about the level of the 30th mile of the Kerinia road-agios Ambrosios. Thanks to the strong wind, the funnel moved to the shore, destroying everything in its path. The newspapers of that time reported thousands of rolled and olive trees torn with the root. The damage was estimated at 70 thousand pounds.

 

November 3, 1967

A strong storm that formed a tornado caused damage to agricultural vehicles and wounded eight troops in the Trikomo region.

 December 22, 1969

Livery, a thunderstorm, a strong wind and a tornado walked along Limassol, in 15 minutes sweeping away everything in its path. Roofs and walls of houses collapsed, pieces of buildings fell on parked cars, crushing them. Two people died in the disaster. Most of the city was flooded. Many enterprises have suffered significant damage.

 

August 25, 1972

The tornado took place in the Famagusta area, a child swimming in the sea became a victim.

 January 2003

The real record was set in 2003, when five tornadoes that walked along the island - from Paphos Airport to the military base in Acrotiri, fell on Cyprus one by one.

 

December 23, 2016

A weak tornado was recorded in the sea opposite the acrotiri, but because of its low strength and short duration, only meteorologists who worked at the Acrotiri station noticed this phenomenon.

 October 24, 2019

March 12, 2020

The bad weather caused tangible damage, especially on the west coast of Cyprus. The wind tumbled down several dozen trees in the Paphos region. In the city itself, as well as in Geroskipa, Koloni, Hagios Dimitrianos, Panaye, Kalepier, Filus, Emba, Constos Statos-Hagios Fotios, in Tala and Mesoi from the hurricane there were interruptions in electricity. The problems with the light were recorded in Limassol. In one building, the glass knocked out glass on the veranda. On the road of Troditiss - the prodromos got a landslide, the movement was blocked.

 December 14, 2020

The greatest destruction, the cyclone, which had passed on November 14, caused Nikitari in the village. 15 houses were unsuitable for housing, many buildings were damaged, power lines were injured. The wind threw 14 electric poles, garbage raised into the air hung on the wires.

 

November 10, 2021

The storm wind, in places reaching 9 points, fell on the island. In three regions, energy shutdown. Part of Limassolsky Prospekt in Nicosia was briefly blocked after about two in the afternoon in the site between Atalassas Avenue and a turn to the Rick building fell an electric pole. On Atalassas Avenue, the road was blocked due to the fact that the wind threatened to tie up construction forests. In Strevolos, Engomi, Kaymaki, trees fell right on the roadway. In Livadia (the Larnaki region), an electric wire broke off due to the wind, from the sparks of which the palm tree caught fire. The fire service responded to two larger fires. The brigades left for a total of 28 calls, in 25 cases the reason was the fall of trees, including on cars parked under them, overturning advertising shields and a break in electric cables. The most affected areas were the center of Nicosia, Hagios Dometios, Engomi, Palluuriotis, Kaymaklos, Strogos And lacatamia. In 18 settlements, the electric wire was damaged due to the wind and electricity turned off. In the occupied territories, a strong wind prevented seven flights from Turkey.

 October 16, 2022

The storm began on the morning of October 16 from the southwest of Paphos. Gradually, the weather spread to most areas of the island. In the mountainous part of the Limassol region, a hurricane damaged buildings in the villages of Hegios Ferapontas and Wuni. The lightning stab caused a small fire in the Chrysochus policy. Great damage was caused to a car service in Paphos, where vehicles and equipment were injured. In three other cases, equipment was damaged in private houses. In Panay, the grape festival had to be canceled due to rains. The Fire Service of the Paphos adopted 30 calls.

 March 18, 2024

Strong rain fell on Cyprus on Green Monday. He was remembered by the fact that intensive precipitation flooded the warehouse of the Ministry of Health.
