Interviewer/Curator: Eleni Nearchou
Temporary Art Points is an action that focuses on a walking route with attitudes on selected cultural heritage points around the workshop area. They are "illuminated" and their forgotten stories are highlighted and their importance in these sites. These points, which surround us but often have been forgotten, have been chosen to follow a single route. Through the artistic interventions, the spaces were narrated and connected to each other and with spectators. The selection of historical and cultural significance in the area was based on the research of the Architect and Research Cultural Heritage of Sevina Floridou. Artist Julia Georgiadou and lighting designer Vassilis Petinaris create an artistic lighting for every place, turning public space into a new means of remodeling and art.
The artist Julia Georgiadou, talks to Limassol Today about the artistic "Light Points", which will take place in the context of the Open House Festival 2025.
How did the creation of the "light points" artistic intervention come about and what about?
The idea of illuminating some places in the city center is of concern to me for many years. The artistic, walking "Light Points" was born of the need to illuminate historical spots of Limassol that remain in the dark, metaphorically and literally - especially the narrow alleys that often cause fear, because they are outdated and left.
Speaking to Sevina Floridou and listening to the stories she gathered, I felt even more strongly that these places had to be illuminated. This is how "Light Points" was created, a walking action in the public space that connects art with the historical memory of the city, highlighting memories and narratives that often remain invisible to the modern urban fabric.
The artistic implementation was done in collaboration with Vassilis Petinaris, while the project was implemented with the support and production of the underground scene / multi -multicultural workshop, inviting the public to discover the past through a participatory nightlife experience that illuminates - literally.
The public is an essential part of the project. Viewers do not watch passively; they walk the whole route from the bridge to the four traffic lights to the multi -storey workshop, stop at the historical points that are guided by the light, listen to the narratives, observe the space and interact with the urban landscape.
What is your contribution to the visual intervention "Light Points"?
I had the original idea of creating "Light Points" and took care of the project. At the same time, along with Vasilis Petinaris, we designed and implemented the lighting interventions, defining how the light highlights the historical points and directs the viewer's gaze.
This process was done in collaboration with Sevina Floridou, who gathered and highlighted the historical narratives, and the help of Adonis Kyprianou in the implementation and technical support of the project was also important.
What is the importance of "light points" for today's generation of Limassol residents and what about the previous ones?
"Light Points" acts as a bridge of memory between generations, offering a special experience at every age.
For today's generation it means the discovery of an invisible past: younger residents, who often go through historical points without knowing their history, are called upon to walk, see and learn, gaining a sense of continuity and converted by passers-by.
For previous generations, enlightened points reactivate memories, bring to life personal and collective stories, and confirm that their heritage acquires new life through art.
The meeting of these two experiences gives birth to dialogue, cultivates the community and forms a collective identity.
Is the public involved in this intervention in some way?
The public is an essential part of the project. Viewers do not watch passively; they walk the whole route from the bridge to the four traffic lights to the multi -storey workshop, stop at the historical points that are guided by the light, listen to the narratives, observe the space and interact with the urban landscape.
They are also called upon to imagine and connect their own memories, reviving the memories of the past.
If "Light Points" were presented 10 years from today, what do you think would be different?
The truth is that I do not think so long or so optimistic at the moment, because as the Spanish philosopher Santogiana says very well, "the peoples who forget their story are doomed to relive it again."
This reminds us of the importance of keeping the memory of our places alive and the reason for existence of works such as "Light Points", trying to illuminate the story and bring it back to the surface.
If the project was presented ten years later, the biggest change might be the city itself, which is evolving rapidly and may have disappeared or transformed many historical points. However, the need for collective memory, the dialogue between generations, the power of light and the hiking experience that unites art and city will remain, maintaining the purpose of the project: to see our place again and to share stories.
