At the helm of the EU Council, the Republic of Cyprus

Cyprus takes over from today and for the next six months the presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Among the important issues it is asked to manage is the Multiannual Financial Framework, which should reflect the Union's priorities for the next seven years.

Defense and security issues, European Union competitiveness issues and the Ukrainian issue are also high on the agenda.

The opening ceremony of the Cypriot presidency will take place on January 7 in Thok.

Among others, the heads of the European Council and the Commission, foreign leaders and heads of regional organizations will attend.

Cyprus presides over the Council for the second time since its accession to the European Union.
