Tomorrow Cyprus takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union and is called upon to face a series of challenges at a special juncture for Euro-Atlantic relations, the European economy and European security.
Until June 30, 2026, Cyprus will have to manage political, economic, defense and social issues of the Union, which affect the daily life of European citizens.
The strengthening of the strategic autonomy of the European Union, with particular emphasis on the defense and security sectors, the management of immigration, the rapprochement of the European Union with the countries of the Middle East are some of the main axes of the Cypriot Presidency.
At the same time, strengthening transatlantic relations and cooperation between the Union and NATO is a key priority. As pointed out in a document of the Cypriot Presidency, the aim is to ensure a transatlantic relationship that will develop in a mutual, transparent and beneficial manner.
It will also advance the negotiations on all legislative matters concerning the proposed Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034. During the next six months, around 330 legislative items will be up for negotiation, almost half of which are new legislative proposals.
