Easter bonfires caused 94 fires in Cyprus

The celebration of Easter in Cyprus, like every year, was marked by the traditional ignition of Easter bonfires - “Lambraji”. However, this year the element of fire again got out of control in many areas of the island.

According to the representative of the fire service Andreas Kettis, in only one night firefighters left for 94 incidents related to the ignition of Lambraji. In total, from noon on Saturday until noon of Sunday, 139 fires were recorded:

42 - in the area of Nicosia29 - in the area of Larnaki15 - in the area of Limassola3 - in the area of Pafos2 - in the Famagusta region

In addition, in the early morning of Sunday, a fire occurred in an apartment, the cause of which was an unbridled Easter candle. A message about the fire was received at 2:43 in the morning. Firefighters arrived at the place and found fire in the kitchen of the second floor of an apartment building.

As a result of the fire, kitchen equipment was completely destroyed, and the rest of the apartment was smoked. A resident of the injured room was hospitalized with carbon monoxide poisoning.

Unfortunately, Easter celebration was overshadowed by tragedy. On Saturday during the day in the suburbs of Nicosia, Strogos, a 22-year-old young man died in the preparation of Lambraji. According to the police, a large wooden pillar installed in the center of the fire collapsed and mortally injured the man.
