NCDs and TV dominates information, shows ESK research

The NGDs and television are the media that the public selects 72% respectively for its update, followed by the web gates with 45% and the radio with 43%. Following is the printed domestic press with 15%, the Greek press with 10%and the foreign type with 9%.

This has shown an ESK research on public opinion and information presented today at the Journalism Home, along with a study between reporters on the situation in the profession. The survey was conducted by Cypronetwork in July with a layered and representative sample of 1000 Pancyprian people.

In the presentation of the investigations, Cypronetwork President Christos Michaelides said that in the question of what means you are most informed, 4 out of 10 respondents responded to the MSDs - with an increasing trend compared to previous years - and almost 3 out of 10 television - with a television of 10 years. The radio and printed type have much lower rates.

In the media evaluation, he continued, the best indicators are featured by television and radio with 41% and 39% positive image respectively, 32% of social networks, while the printed press has 27% positive placement, 28% the corresponding percentage for online gates.

In individual indicators, such as quality and reliability, said Mr Michaelides, the radio has the highest rates compared to the internet gates and MSDs.  In the quality and reliability indicators, he added, the gates and NGDs present comparatively lower rates than traditional media. In the indicators of reliability and quality, he noted, the negative rates are generally higher than the positives.

In the general evaluation of SMEs in Cyprus, Mr Michaelides said that the positive index ranges from 32%to 39%, while those who responded with moderate placement to some media and 50%. "The negative indicators here are much lower than the positives."

To the question of the penetration of the Fake News, 21% responded very much, a lot of 23% and 37% answered no too much. Such news, fake news, are more found in NGDs and online.

According to survey findings, 36% versus 48% said they disagreed with the statement that the media are reliable, 42% said they agreed with the position that it had confidence in Cypriot journalists, compared to 45%, while with the position of journalists 24%. 30% agree that Cypriot journalists are reliable while 40% disagree. 27% consider media reliable in Cyprus, compared to 45%, 30% consider media under -staffed as business, compared to 18%. For work insecurity in the media, 51% of respondents said they did not know and 35% agreed with this position, while 27% of respondents agreed that Cypriot journalists have freedom of expression when 43% disagreed and 35% said they did not know.

In the question from which media will be informed of the forthcoming parliamentary elections, 45% responded to television, MKD 21%, 12% of the web gates and there are radio and printed press.

As for whether the electorate is manipulated, respondents consider 69% to be 25% that it is not done. They believe that manipulation is done by the government, political parties, followed by media owners, journalists and pollsters.

At the level of professionals, said Mr Michaelides, journalists garner 27% who is considered a good indicator of professionalism.

Internal investigation

For the research on journalists, Christos Michaelides said that the question about the impression of journalists before they were professionally involved, 7 out of 10 had a better impression before working on the site.

The main weaknesses of Cypriot journalism, he added, are the under -staffing, the viability of the media and the freedom of expression, and the critical view, liberty, deep investigation, and 30% responded to the strengths.

To the question of how free you feel about writing and publishing what is really concerned about you, he answered 44%, a little 18%, no 14%at all. Very 23%.

Six journalists want to complete their professional career in journalism while 4 out of 10 are in search of or looking for another job. Working in the workplace said it felt very much in 19%, quite a few, 29%, a little 36%, no 18%at all.

Whether he has received immediate or indirect threats - warnings of reporting he did, 44%sometimes responded, at all, at all, a few times 15%, often 10%.  Asked how you judge the behavior of media owners, 37% responded bad, 32% moderate, 23% bearable, 6% good.

President ESC

The findings of the research need further study and analysis and involve clear writing samples of where it is and where the media landscape walks in our country, ESK President George Fragos said in his introductory speech.

For the great research, he noted the primacy of the NCDs and television with 72% in public preferences, stressing that the same media, NCDs and television, maintain the negative lead in the spread of false news. "This is if it is antithesis, contradiction and paradox. First to reward someone with your choices and then make it for what he is spreading, "he said.

He also noted that this year's Cypriot journalists are also having public confidence to a greater extent than media owners. "We trust us by 42% and our employers by 36%. The gap has grown this year, compared to previous years. "

This year in great investigation, Mr Fragos said, questions were also included in the forthcoming parliamentary elections. "Empress of information is highlighted by television with 45% of public preferences. Following is 21%, 12%news websites and the radio with the newspapers receive from 3%. The public recognizes that the electorate is manipulated by 69%. 86% give it first to the media and 74% to journalists. "

For the internal survey of the NSC that was exclusively addressed to journalists, the organization's president noted that 84% were expecting things better in the industry than they found and that everyone recognizes that the biggest problem is the under -staffing of SMEs. "56% of journalists want to stay in the industry until their retirement, but the remaining 44% are looking for another professional employment, less ongoing and more lucrative. At the same time, the amazing 69% admit that he was under pressure on the content of his work, often, often or sometimes. 58% of colleagues have complaints about how much the state supports Cypriot journalism and its officials. "

As far as the guild is concerned, the NSK receives a positive sign from 47% of journalists and a negative from 41% said George Fragos saying that many must be done, which can only be achieved with collective, organized action. "The ESK has been and remains a race. Take advantage of it, reinforce it, support it, join her, "she concluded.

Bank of Cyprus Corporate Affairs Director

We firmly believe that journalism, as well as the financial sector, is one of the main pillars of the Cypriot economy and society, said Savvas Kunnos, Director of Bank of Cyprus Corporate Affairs, which finances investigations.

Representatives of journalism, at all levels, are the ones who largely influence and define public opinion, he noted. Even in modern times, where research shows that most of our fellow citizens are informed by the NGDs, this does not exclude traditional media, he added, because they have in turn be adapted to the commands of the times by creating their own specialized channels on social media.

Mr Kunnos observed that the two studies, which he studied, raise concerns as the results record deterioration compared to the corresponding last year. And that, he said, he doesn't say it with frustration, but with reflection.

The most problematic is the conclusion that most media officials would like to change their profession, he said, and this is an indication that comes to confirm that the media sector is going through a difficult period and cosmogenic changes. "That is why incisions are required at all levels with each involved to take on the share of responsibility."

A share of responsibility, he continued, also assigned to advertisers, both because they want to advertise in the media that enjoy the public's appreciation, and because they want to be inappropriate and objectively but at the same time to have the knowledge and depth to present the news and the facts as real.

Our world has now become so complicated, he noted that it requires specialization and deep knowledge of each object so that they do not make the wrong impressions of even well -intentioned, but also to prevent the media and their officials not to be accused of spreading false news. "Because these fake news is now changing form. They are not pure lies, it can be half the truth, it can be the truth. "

So, he concluded, we all have a responsibility to find the solutions needed to recover the information sector, not only financially but also qualitatively.
