US President Donald Trump has said he will withhold wages from air traffic controllers who do not immediately return to work.
He added that he would recommend giving a $10,000 bonus to those who did not miss work during the 41-day shutdown of the federal government.
The fiscal paralysis has suspended a number of public services.
More than 1,500 domestic flights were canceled today as the federal government's default continues and a shortage of air traffic controllers also wreaks havoc on air transport.
