Strengthening digital governance and connectivity records a report for Cyprus

Cyprus' strong performance in digital governance, broadband network expansion and workplace digitization is cited in a Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) report published on Tuesday, noting that the country's position as one of the region's leading digital economies is being strengthened.

According to a related announcement, the international DCO organization that promotes sustainable and inclusive digital economies presented the report "Digital Economy Navigator 2025" (DEN 2025) during the second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, noting, among other things, that Cyprus has achieved remarkable improvements in the speed of the fixed broadband network and in the digitization of workplace, through continuous infrastructure upgrades and the increased adoption of technological applications by businesses.

According to the report, Cyprus also ranks high in digital governance, while the country aligns with EU standards for data protection, cybersecurity and interoperability. "These results reflect Cyprus' continued commitment to creating a reliable, transparent and innovation-friendly digital environment," it noted.

The report also mentions Cyprus' efforts to expand access to digital tools and boost the development of digital skills through education and training programs. "Advances in e-Government services consistent with European frameworks have contributed to greater efficiency, trust and competitiveness across the economy," says the DCO.

Covering 80 countries representing 94% of the world's GDP and 85% of the world's population, the DEN 2025 report provides an overview of progress in the global digital economy, in the database. The report is based on 145 indicators and insights from more than 41,000 respondents and helps policymakers, investors and businesses assess how infrastructure, innovation capacity and digital policy frameworks are developing to support sustainable development, it added.

The Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nikodimos Damianou, welcomed the report's findings which he said recognized Cyprus' progress in digital governance, broadband and the promotion of digitization in the workplace.

"Cyprus' continued investment in secure digital infrastructure and high-speed connectivity allows both citizens and businesses to benefit from reliable access and efficient online services," he said.

“We are proud to see our progress reflected in areas such as data protection, interoperability and the expansion of digital skills across our workforce. These results reinforce our vision for Cyprus as a reliable, innovative and inclusive digital hub for the region," he added.

DCO Secretary General Deemah AlYahya said the report illustrates both the progress already made and the opportunities that lie ahead. He said the Organization for Digital Cooperation envisions a future where citizens of every state "can meaningfully participate in the digital economy, not only as consumers of digital services, but also as creators and innovators."

According to DEN 2025 internet access now reaches more than four out of five people worldwide, with lower and middle income countries recording the fastest progress. The report estimates that connecting currently underserved communities could enable more than 1.3 billion people to benefit from digital banking and online services, promoting inclusion and shared prosperity.

Artificial intelligence continues to develop rapidly and the new 'Digital for Sustainability' pillar highlights how the technology can support more efficient public administration and environmentally responsible innovation. The DCO notes that Cyprus' success in combining advanced regulation with digital infrastructure makes it a strong example of sustainable and secure digital transformation, the release concludes.
