Donald Trump has threatened the BBC with a defamation lawsuit, seeking $1 billion in damages and demanding that the British broadcaster withdraw a misleading editing of one of his speeches in a "Panorama" documentary broadcast last year, a week before the US presidential election.
The channel is accused of splicing together two separate excerpts from a Trump speech, creating the impression that it was inciting the January 2021 events on Capitol Hill.
Agence France-Presse reported that the US President had sent a letter to the BBC, giving it until Friday to withdraw the documentary and apologise.
Following the uproar, the BBC's director-general and head of information resigned yesterday, while its chairman apologized for an "editing error".
