Syria has thwarted two separate attempts by Islamic State to assassinate its president, Ahmed al-Sara, two senior officials have revealed.
They pointed out that plots against Sarah's life had been foiled in recent months and underlined the immediate threat he faces as he tries to consolidate his power in a country ravaged by fourteen years of civil war.
The assassination attempts came to light as Syria prepares to join the US-led global coalition against Islamic State.
The historic meeting that Ahmed al-Sara will have today at the White House with Donald Trump, the first Syrian leader with the president of the United States, is part of this context.
