The International Conference "The Life and Contribution of Pythagoras to Mathematics, Science and Philosophy" was successfully held on 3 and 4 October 2025 at the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) in Limassol.
The Conference was held under the auspices of the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr. Athena Michailidou, and was co-organized by five institutions: the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, the Cyprus University of Technology, the Cyprus Mathematical Society (CY.M.E.), the University of Cyprus and the Hellenic Mathematical Society.
The Opening Ceremony included greetings from the Minister of Education, the Vice-Rector for Economic Planning and Development of TEPAK, Professor Evangelos Akylas, the Presidents of the Organizing and Scientific Committees, as well as the Mayor of Western Samos (hometown of Pythagoras), Mr. Themistocles Papatheofanous. The artistic program added a distinct aesthetic and intellectual dimension to the proceedings of the Conference.
Invited speakers from Switzerland, France, Poland and Greece, as well as distinguished researchers and educators from Cyprus, Greece and abroad participated in the two days of work. The presentations covered a wide range of topics — from mathematics, science and philosophy, to astronomy, modern cultural uptake of Pythagorean thought, music, nutrition and Artificial Intelligence.
A special moment of the Conference was the unveiling of the bust of Pythagoras by the Director of the Pedagogical Institute, Dr. Elena Hatzikakou on behalf of the Minister. The work, created by the sculptor and member of the School of Fine and Applied Arts of TEPAK, Panagiotis Pasanda, now adorns the forecourt of the Andreas Themistokleous building of TEPAK, on Athens Street.
TEPAK, as host, supported the Conference from the beginning.
The contribution, presence and active participation of academics, members of the administrative staff, as well as many student volunteers and representatives of the collaborating institutions, contributed decisively to the flawless organization of a Conference that connected mathematics, scientific knowledge, philosophy, music, nutrition and astronomy, with innovation, imagination, questioning, creativity and culture.
The announcements of all the speakers will be included in a special edition of the scientific journal of the Cyprus Mathematical Society (CY.M.E.).
