Indirect talks between the United States and Iran, mediated by Oman, were ongoing until late afternoon in Geneva as part of efforts to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program.
According to an Iranian official who spoke to Reuters, there is a possibility of a framework agreement if Washington separates nuclear from non-nuclear issues, although important gaps remain.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Oman described the exchanges as creative and positive, while the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, also participated in the contacts, with the role of a technical observer.
Iran says the negotiations are limited to the nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions.
However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Iran's refusal to discuss its ballistic program is a major problem, stressing that without progress on the nuclear issue it will be difficult to make progress on the missile issue as well.
The talks are taking place under the shadow of heightened tensions, with United States President Donald Trump warning of military action if they fail.
