European Commissioner for Animal Health: The Commission will support livestock farmers

Cyprus is not alone, said the European Commissioner responsible for Animal Health, Oliver Varcheli, adding that the European Commission will help and support the breeders, the animals and the island.

He was speaking at the "Zino" Coordination Center after a meeting held with all the competent Services dealing with foot-and-mouth disease, in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture, Maria Panagiotou.

The European Commissioner noted that he will assist and advise the Cypriot government while the committee will financially assist the livestock farmers who have been destroyed. There will also be help in the matter of vaccinations. He also mentioned that it is important to limit movements and movements. As he noted, the first two weeks are the most critical for containing the virus.

The Minister, Maria Panagiotou thanked the Commissioner for the close cooperation they had on the issue of foot-and-mouth disease reduction.

He also expressed a "big thank you", to the Commissioner who assured about the halloumi.
