According to the fresh data of the Eurostat, Cyprus youth remains in the parental house longer than in many countries of the European Union.
The average age of the independent congress here is 27.2 years, which makes Cyprus one of the leaders in the late exit from the family. For comparison, the highest indicators are recorded in Croatia (31.3 years), Slovakia (30.9 years) and Greece (30.7 years).
At the same time, the inhabitants of Scandinavia become independent noticeably earlier. The Swedes are leaving their parental houses on average in 21.9 years, the Danes in 21.7 years, and the Finns - in 21.4 years.
The study pays special attention to the financial burden. Among Europeans aged 15 to 29 years, almost 9.7% spend more than 40% of their income on housing, while among the total population this figure is 8.2%.
The greatest load is observed in Greece, where more than 30% of young people are faced with a high share of housing, as well as in Denmark (28.9%). For comparison: in the Netherlands this figure is 15.3%, in Germany - 14.8%.
In Cyprus, the situation looks different. Here, the level of "housing overload" is only 2.8%, one of the lowest in the EU. Experts associate this fact with the fact that young Cypriots remain longer to live with their parents and begin an independent life later, which reduces their financial obligations at an early age.
However, in Greece, despite the similar trend of late leaving the family, the burden of housing remains high. This emphasizes that the relationship between the age of the congress and the cost of housing is not always direct and depends on the level of income, the dynamics of real estate prices and the general economic situation.
The late exit from the parental house in Cyprus is also explained by cultural and social characteristics. Family ties traditionally play a key role, and their own housing is more often purchased only after creating a family. At the same time, the island real estate market in recent years has been demonstrating prices, especially in coastal cities, which makes the rent or purchase of apartments an even more cost task for young people.
According to Cyprus realtors, in 2025 the average cost of renting a one -room apartment in Limassol and Nicosia ranges from 750 to 1000 euros per month, which significantly exceeds the possibilities of most young specialists. Therefore, for many families, co -living is the best choice.
