Cyprus is going to create its own structure to combat organized crime, an analogue of the Cypriot FSB.
The new unit will be modeled on the recently created and successful Greek service called the Greek Organized Crime Directorate (ΔΑΟΕ, known in the press as the “Greek FBI”).
On December 4, the Minister of Justice of Cyprus, Marios Chartziotis, held a meeting with the Minister for the Protection of Citizens of Greece, Michalis Chrysochoidis, at which details of the creation of the new service were discussed.
According to Hartsiotis, the Cyprus unit will be formed with close support and advice from Greece. He stressed that both countries face common threats and form “communicating vessels” in matters of organized crime. Effective counteraction requires constant vigilance and daily exchange of information and experience.
Michalis Chrysochoidis noted the successes of the Greek DAOE service, which in just one year carried out 1,500 arrests and 550 pre-trial detentions, proving its effectiveness. He emphasized that organized crime is transnational and therefore requires close international cooperation to disrupt criminal networks.
The creation of a Cyprus service will be an important step in strengthening security and, as the authorities say, will allow us to respond to threats faster and more effectively.
