According to the monitoring of the Copernicus Earth, the arid conditions in Europe and the Mediterranean countries continue to deteriorate rapidly. Of particular concern is the situation in the central and southeastern parts of the continent, where the level of drought reaches critical indicators.
According to the combined drought index (CDI) in mid -April 2025, the alarming situation is recorded in the Baltic countries, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Belarus, Ukraine and the southern regions of Russia. In addition, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Western Balkans, Cyprus, Turkey, Malta and a number of other Mediterranean islands are under threat in a wider southeastern area.
The drought covered both the northern and western regions of Europe, including the south of Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Ireland, Great Britain, a significant part of Germany, individual regions of France, Alps and Hungary.
Nevertheless, there are positive signals: improving conditions is observed in Scandinavia, on the Pyrenee Peninsula, in the southern and central France, Northern and Central Italy, as well as in the Carpathian region.
Due to a long shortage of precipitation, emergency measures were introduced in many countries. Among them - Great Britain, Central Europe, Russia, Ukraine, the Alpine Region and individual areas of Turkey.
A warning about the risk of drought remains relevant for the south of Spain, Cyprus, Greece, Balkan, as well as the Middle East, including Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Iraq, Iran and Azerbaijan.
Of particular concern is the fact that in the reporting period the air temperature significantly exceeded perennial climatic norms, and the waves of the heat that covered Europe from west to east only strengthened arid processes.
