The head of the community of the mountain village of Alona, Michalis Nikiforos, met with representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Cyprus to discuss the fate of the hazelnut forest. According to him, the walnut forest could “completely disappear.”
The forest, where wild hazelnuts* ripen in summer, is located within a Natura 2000 protected area. Ecologist Eleftherios Hadzisterkotis proposes giving it the status of a National Park. This will help protect the forest from uncontrolled nut collection and deforestation.
*Hazelnuts(hazel or hazel) is a genus of heat-loving shrubs (less commonly trees) of the birch family.
Every summer in the village of Platanistas, neighboring Alona, ahazelnut festival. In the shade of trees and vine-covered gazebos of a mountain village, festival guests are treated to dishes, one of the ingredients of which is Cypriot hazelnut.
