Archbishop George announced that during the next meeting of the Holy Synod, on January 8, proposals for changes to the Charter of the Church of Cyprus will be tabled.
Speaking to Rick, Kyproos Georgios said that his own proposal for a change in the way the hierarchs are elected, so that they are elected by the Holy Synod, except for the Archbishop, will also be discussed.
He also emphasized that during the Synod, the issue of the monks of the Holy Monastery of Agios Abbakum, who are still celebrating mysteries, will be raised. He added that the Church does not have the power to stop them, however it will inform the faithful that the sacraments being performed are invalid.
With reference to the Territorial Bishop of Karpasia Christoforos, His Beatitude noted that so far there is no complaint and that in case one is submitted, the Holy Synod will take up the matter.
In the morning, a solemn doxology was performed for the beginning of the new year in the Cathedral of the Apostle Barnabas.
The government was represented by the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Clea Papapellina, and party representatives attended.
Mrs. Papaellina specifically referred to the assumption of the Presidency of the Council, noting that the goal is a successful term and the contribution of Cyprus to the strengthening of the European Union.
His Beatitude noted that the Church will support the entire effort and will have meetings with foreign leaders who will visit Cyprus, including the President of Ukraine, Zelensky.
