The heat provokes the demand for electricity

On June 26, the highest demand for electricity over the summer was recorded in Cyprus. It was caused by a hot and wet weather period. On June 27, a yellow warning was again announced on the island, it is valid from 13:00 to 17:00.

The press secretary of the operator of the electricity transmission system Hara Kushappa told the Cyprus news agency that the demand almost reached 1070 megavatts. The peak of 1069 Megavatts fell at 16:00. This is much higher than in previous days. Despite the sharp jump in demand, the system worked without interruptions.

On June 27, the Cyprus meteorological service issued another yellow warning, already the third in a row. The air in the internal areas of the island is expected to warm up to 42 ° C. This will again provoke a high demand for electricity, but no problems are expected, since the need hardly exceed the previous days.

The situation may worsen

Analysts say that the periods of severe heat and high humidity lead to an increase in demand for electricity at the beginning of each summer. The main factor that reduces the load on the energy system remains renewable energy sources. In the afternoon, when demand reaches a peak, renewable energy sources cover more than 68% of production.

However, the press secretary of the transmission system operator warned that the situation could worsen due to strong heat at the end of this season. Studies and forecasts show that there may be days when the power of the power plant will barely grab. Unexpected malfunctions and planned maintenance can also lead to interruptions in the operation of the system. “In such cases, any disconnects necessary to control the network will last no more than 20 minutes and will alternate between the areas,” Kushappa explained.

Weather on June 27-28

On Friday, June 27, throughout the island it will be clear and very hot. Inside the country, the thermometer column will rise to 40-42 ° C, in the foothill areas-to 36-41 ° C, in the mountains to 28-35 ° C. In the evening and during the predawn hours of June 28, small cloudy and fog may form, especially on the eastern and southern coasts. The temperature will decrease to about 22 ° C in the internal areas and on the coasts and to 20 ° C at the tops of the Troodos.

On weekends, the weather will be clear, cloudiness is expected in mountainous areas.
