The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on Russian energy groups Rosneft and Lukoil

The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on Russian energy groups Rosneft and Lukoil, accusing Moscow of a "lack of serious commitment to a peace process to end the war in Ukraine".

In a statement, the US Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, notes that given Russian President Vladimir Putin's refusal to end an absurd war, sanctions have been imposed on the two largest Russian oil companies. Mr. Besent states that these fuel companies finance the Kremlin's war machine.

It declares, at the same time, that Washington is willing to take further action if necessary, urging its allies to adopt the sanctions.

A few hours after the announcements by the US Department of Finance, President Trump expressed the hope that the sanctions against Moscow will be short-lived and that they will contribute to the end of the war in Ukraine.
