Independent left-wing candidate Catherine Connolly is the new President of Ireland, following yesterday's elections held in the country.
Her only opposition candidate and a member of the centrist party acknowledged her defeat, wishing every success to the new President.
Connolly, 68, a former clinical psychologist and lawyer, succeeds Michael Higgins as Ireland's 10th President.
Since 2016, he has been a member of the Irish Parliament, while he also served as deputy speaker of the House of Commons.
The final election results are expected to be announced later this evening.
