Customs officers increase surveillance at airports

The Customs Service spoke about how it monitors the import of large amounts of cash without filling out a declaration and what violations and settlements there are in this area.

The Department of Customs Control reported that 14 people were detained in 2023 as part of its work to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. They tried to cross the border with cash amounting to more than 10,000 euros without declaring it.

In 2023, customs confiscated a total of 1.29 million euros that passengers wanted to bring into or out of the country illegally. 12 cases were considered and settled out of court, the settlement amount was 193,600 euros.

Two more cases are in the process of possible settlement. One case of false declaration of €88,950 is being heard by the Larnaca District Court.

Customs provides several examples of violations and settlement amounts.

Attempt to export cash without declaration:

To Germany – 244,875 euros, settlement amount – 43,000 euros. To Egypt – 53,605 euros, settlement amount – 2,200 euros. To the UK – 45,000 euros, settlement amount – 4,500 euros.

Attempted import without declaration:

From Austria – 400,000 euros, settlement amount – 100,000 euros. From Poland – 260,000 euros, settlement amount – 26,000 euros. From the UAE – 45,000 euros, settlement amount – 4,500 euros. From Lebanon – 26,991 euros, settlement amount – 5,400 euros. From TRNC – 54,253 euros, settlement amount – 8,000 euros.
