Courts expedite consideration of pending cases

The Justice Department has expedited pending cases. These are considered cases in which a decision was not made before December 31, 2018. The department is successfully fulfilling the goal set by the European Union.

In his annual report to Cabinet on progress on delays in trials, Minister of Justice and Public Order Marios Hartsiotis outlined great progress in this area.

The Minister of Justice reported that, as of the end of June 2024, 55% of overdue cases had been reviewed, closed or settled. As part of the European Recovery and Resilience Programme, Cyprus has committed to resolving 20% of its backlog by June 2024.

It is considered that the deadline for considering a case has been violated if a decision on it was not made before December 31, 2018.

In the course of judicial reform and in light of its commitments to the EU, Cyprus has addressed the issue of delays in judicial proceedings. The European Sustainability and Development Program has set a target of 20% resolution of cases by June 2024 and 40% resolution by June 2026.

Marios Chartziotis emphasizes that the goal was exceeded. Active work continues now on the remaining overdue proceedings to reach decisions or settle any pending cases.
