On December 29, bad weather struck the mountainous region of Platres, causing serious damage to the Christmas village. A strong wind “razed to the ground” part of the festive infrastructure installed in the central square.
Platres Mayor Dimitris Papatheodotou said extreme weather conditions were recorded in the area in the evening. The wind gusts were so powerful that they damaged and destroyed a significant part of the Christmas structures.
According to him, about 20 trade tents were completely destroyed, and decorative elements and technical equipment were also damaged. Fortunately, there were no reports of casualties.
The Christmas village is currently operating on a limited basis. Municipal services have already begun restoration work. It is expected that full operation of the festival site will be resumed from January 2 to January 4, subject to improved weather conditions.
Authorities urge visitors to stay tuned for updates and exercise caution during unstable weather conditions.
