The Cyprus Electricity Authority (EAC) and BirdLife Cyprus signed on Monday a Memorandum of Cooperation with the aim of upgrading their cooperation in matters related to the protection of wild birds and biodiversity in general.
In a press release from the EAC, it is clarified that the agreement provides for the planning and implementation of joint actions to prevent, monitor and mitigate the effects of the electricity grid on wildlife, with an emphasis on vulnerable and endangered species, such as the vulture, the bald eagle and other large birds. It is added that this cooperation is part of the wider framework of EAC's commitment to include in its actions the protection of the environment and wildlife, with the development of its energy network.
It is also stated that the purpose of the collaboration is to create a joint framework for action that will allow the two parties to exchange expertise, identify and implement practical solutions to reduce the impact of energy infrastructure on birds and promote joint awareness and education initiatives. In particular, through this collaboration, EAC and BirdLife Cyprus seek to contribute substantially to the coexistence of the energy infrastructure with the preservation of biodiversity, it is noted.
It adds that recent studies and tracking data from satellite transmitters carrying birds of prey for tracking purposes show that electrocution and impact are the second leading cause of mortality for the Vulture and the third for the Griffon.
It is added that EAC, recognizing its role as a key manager of the energy network, invests in cooperation and innovation that contribute to sustainable development, in line with European and international commitments for a green transition with respect for biodiversity and the environment.
