According to new data from Eurostat, the number of applications for refugee status has decreased in Cyprus.
If previously Cyprus was consistently the leader, then based on the results of applications submitted in May 2024, it dropped to fourth place. In particular, there are 29.9 applications per 100,000 residents of the country. Ireland was in first place (37.4 applications per 100,000 people), Greece was in second (33.2 per 100,000 people), and Spain was in third place (31.7 per 100,000 people).
In the EU as a whole, there were 17.1 applications per 100,000 people in May. In total, 76,795 people applied for international protection in May 2024, which is 5 percent less than in May 2023.
The country with the highest total number of first-time asylum applicants in May 2024 was Germany, accounting for 24 percent of total applications in the EU. The number of repeat applications was 6,465, up 12 percent from May 2023.
In May 2024, Syrians remained the largest group of asylum seekers (11,460 first-time asylum seekers). They were followed by Venezuelans (6,170) and Afghans (5,535).
In May 2024, 2,565 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum for the first time in the EU, the largest numbers from Syria (790) and Afghanistan (390). Germany again accepted the largest number of refugees.
