The situation in Benin is now under control, after the coup attempt by a group of soldiers, who attacked state institutions.
According to the African country's president, Patrice Talon, the security forces took action, putting an end to the attempt to subvert democracy.
"Security and public order will be maintained everywhere in the national territory," Talon said, stressing that "this treason will not go unpunished."
For its part, neighboring Nigeria confirmed it had carried out airstrikes last night in Cotonou - home to Benin's government - and deployed troops on the ground. He took this action at the request of the Benin government to preserve constitutional order and counter the coup attempt.
