Director of Medical and Public Health Services Elisabeth Constantinou said that "Cypriot medical services are ready to take all necessary measures should cases of monkeypox be detected on the island, although the likelihood of such an event remains extremely low."
According to her, since 2022, five cases of this disease have been recorded in Cyprus.
She added that despite the low risk, medical services remain on high alert and participate in all meetings of competent authorities, including the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Constantinou stressed that monkeypox vaccinations are available at adult vaccination centers in all cities of the country. The vaccine will be provided to anyone who voluntarily wants to be vaccinated.
“For those traveling to Africa, we recommend getting vaccinated before traveling and avoiding contact with people who have a rash or other signs of illness,” she stressed.
