Melissa Barrera is John Travolta's new co-star in the highly anticipated survival thriller Black Tides.
Directed by Renny Harlin, principal photography began on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria with the star's daughter Ella Bleu Travolta, Álvaro Mel and Dylan Torrell rounding out the cast.
The film follows Bill Pierce (Travolta), “an estranged father who attempts to reconnect with his daughter and grandson. However, his quest takes nightmarish proportions when their boat is targeted by rogue killer whales off the southern coast of Spain.
"Melissa brings to Rebecca both fire and sensitivity, elements that the role demands...together with John, they create cinematic magic and elevate every moment of the story," the director known for the hit films "Deep Blue Sea" and "Die Hard 2" told Deadline.
The script is written by Chris Sparling and Ángel Agudo, produced by Adrián Guerra and Nuria Valls for Nostromo Pictures.
"Shooting at sea is one of the most difficult things you can do in cinema, but the footage we get is amazing," said Adrian Guerra.
"The cast has bonded in a way that is rare and powerful, while Rennie's directorial skills are top-notch, balancing gritty spectacle with real emotion," he added.
It is worth noting that the role of 25-year-old Ella Blue Travolta in "Black Tides" will be the fifth on the big screen.
Previously, she appeared in two films alongside her father, 2009's 'Old Dogs' and 2019's 'The Poison Rose' while 'Get Lost' and 'Nice People' are set to premiere.
