On the roads of Cyprus from January to May 2025, seven motorcyclists died already, which almost catch up with the total number for the entire last year (10 people).
According to the road police, this figure causes serious anxiety, especially considering that the three dead are couriers of the delivery service. This is an unprecedented case: earlier in a year a maximum of one such death was recorded, and sometimes - not a single one.
Despite the fact that in all fixed cases, motorcyclists wore helmets, the clashes were so heavy that it was not possible to save life. The police have already held meetings with organized groups of motorcyclists to discuss the safety and prepare new initiatives.
According to statistics, motorcyclists and pedestrians annually make up almost 50% of all those who died in an accident. In 2023, 5 motorcyclists and 7 pedestrians died on the roads of Cyprus. In 2024, the number of dead increased to 10 motorcyclists and 10 pedestrians. By May 2025, seven deaths were already recorded among motorcyclists and four among pedestrians.
In particular, four of the dead are drivers of motorcycles, another is a moped driver. The authorities note that the death of couriers has become a new alarming trend.
Road police are studying the causes of the death of delivery drivers. Among the possible factors:
The increase in the number of couriers against the background of demand for fast delivery; low level of training; inattention of other drivers; high speeds and overwork due to dense schedule.
According to the head of the road police, Haris Evripid, the tragedy is due to a complex of reasons, and not one mistake. He initiated individual meetings with this category of drivers to increase the level of security and awareness.
The summer season also causes concerns: with an increase in the number of motorcyclists on the roads, the risk of an accident increases. The police calls for all participants in the movement - especially car drivers - to show vigilance and take into account the presence of motorcyclists on the road.
