Larnaca Airport is not easy to drop off and pick up passengers

Larnaca Airport experiences traffic jams during peak hours, making it difficult for drivers to drop off and pick up passengers. The problem escalated in October 2023 when, following a Hamas attack on Israel, the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus closed the access road to the airport's arrivals area for security reasons. Summer 2024,reportsPhileleftheros, the situation became unbearable.

— Footage inappropriate for a European airport is recorded almost every day during rush hours at Larnaca airport, where long lines of cars line up. The inconvenience for drivers is enormous: some circle for hours to find a place in an area intended for short stays, the publication states.

Many people cannot find a space even in regular paid airport parking lots because they are overcrowded. The number of parking spaces was increased by 350, but the problem remained as passenger traffic increased.

“The only solution is to add a drop-off area on the upper level of the airport, and we are working on that.” I indicated a specific location to separate those arriving from those departing. Now they are all in one place, and there is a congestion of cars there. The same problem occurred at Paphos airport, but we added a drop-off area and now people are happy,” said the Minister of Transport of the Republic of Cyprus, Alexis Vafiadis.

The problem at Larnaca Airport is compounded by people parking illegally wherever they can, even on the small roundabout and bridge, making the risk of vehicle collisions very high.

The international consortium Hermes Airports, which manages Larnaca and Paphos airports, said it continues to comply with government instructions. It has been agreed that the parking fee is 1 euro for the first 20 minutes.
