Katerina Efstratiu is the youngest Cyprus Tkachikha, working on a traditional machine. Her workshop is located in the Agia Omomotes in Nicosia.
“If you want to realize a traditional craft, you must adapt a little and change it. Find another or better use for him. Then you can continue your job, maintain life in it, ”Katerina explains her mission.
From childhood, Katerina was prone to art, she studied drawing her child. But she was not sure which area of art she wanted to study until the basic design course passed.
Then she continued her studies at Brighton University, having received a bachelor's degree in 3D design and needlework. “The training consisted of studying various materials through master classes and full-fledged practical classes,” she said. During one such master class, he was dedicated to working with polymers, she realized what exactly attracted her.
“Every time I took up the project, I always included threads and weaving equipment in it. It was then that I realized that I should get a master's degree in the field of textile design, ”says Katerina. So she did.

Returning to the island in 2018, Katerina Efstratiu began to study traditional Cyprus weaving. “I knew that it exists, but did not know how it worked. All my ideas developed exclusively in museums. I began to study traditional Cypriot weaving and its technique, ”says the designer. In the end, she dwelled on the technique of Fitticiotico - the old tradition from the Paphos village of Fiti, known for her branded patterns and bright colors. Today Katerina Efstratiu works in this technique and teaches it both in private lessons in her studio and in the center of education for adults during the Ministry of Education. “It is sad that this technique is not used in our daily life, because it is difficult to find application. Traditionally, fabrics, decorated using the “fitics” technique, served as kitchen towels, napkins for a table or TV. My goal is to return the equipment to our daily life and find other ways to use it ”, - says Katerina.
To do this, in her works, she changes the original color palette "Fitticiotico" and the motive of patterns. She uses a simpler design and not so bright colors. Katerina makes tabs in this style, decorative pillows and everyday household items. But for Katerina herself, the practical use of craft is not so important. “This is part of our culture and history. That's why we must know about her. Most people these days have no idea what it is, so I strive to talk about technology, ”the girl says. She adds that she loves Cyprus and wants to work for the benefit of her country.
But classes with weaving business have another effect - therapeutic. “When you begin to weave, it can be difficult to stop. A very convenient activity when you just want to be a little alone and concentrate. It can be quite meditative, ”says the weaver.
