The Plenary approved a law that harmonizes national legislation with European directives on the use of Renewable Energy Sources to improve the design of the electricity market.
Among other things, new timetables are set regarding the completion of the licensing procedures for RES projects and timetables for the completion of the licensing process and their connection to the grid for specific RES projects and technologies, such as offshore RES projects, energy storage systems and heat pumps.
At the same time, regulation of the responsibilities of the Single Service Service is introduced with regard to ensuring compliance with the deadlines for completing the licensing procedures for renewable energy production stations.
It is noted that the transfer of the EU Directive into the national legal order was urgent, because the time commitment for the adoption of some of its provisions by the member states was until July 1, 2024.
On February 12, 2025, the European Commission issued a reasoned opinion against the Republic of Cyprus, due to the delay in the harmonization of national legislation, but the bill was submitted to the Parliament after the expiration of the mentioned deadline, specifically on May 22, 2025.
The Member of Parliament of the Environmentalist Movement Charalambos Theopeptou once again criticized the Government's energy plans and recalled the fact that the EU wants us to have zero pollutants by 2050. Given that, he said, we have to do 16,000 renovations a year, which really shows how far behind we are in our plans.
