The development of the situation in the Limnes area in Pussus brings bad news for local residents.
According to the results of a recent integrated geological research conducted by the Department of the Geological Service, the status of a temporary “white zone”, assigned to the area after landslides, is now becoming constant.
This decision is based on the final results of many years of monitoring. The representative of the Geological Service of the Khristulos Hatzigorgiu also confirmed the information, who at the same time emphasized that there was no danger to life if seismic shocks or extreme weather phenomena do not occur.
In total, 46 residential buildings were in the area of active landslide. According to Khatzigorgiu, experts conducted a detailed study of the soil and structure of the terrain to evaluate risks and determine the response measures.
The filming group of Sigma visited the pussy, where both the appearance and the internal state of a number of damaged and dilapidated houses were captured.
“Of course, we are worried, but we hope that everything will cost and the consequences will not be destructive,” said the local resident Lazaros Panayi.
As Lazaros Lazaros, the former head of the Pusser community council, reminded, in 2023, after the next landslide, an order was issued on the eviction of 25 houses recognized as unsuitable for living. This was announced at a special meeting in the House of Representatives.
Earlier, the authorities took technical measures to strengthen the soil, including the construction of a pile retaining wall worth about 7 million euros. However, the results were unsatisfactory. It is assumed that without the intervention of the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK), expenses could reach 40 million euros-but in this case the wall would hardly stop the landslide.
A resident of the Pantelis Karaghannis district noted with bitterness:
"I was the first to lose my house ..."
The final assignment to the area of the status of the “White Zone” (zone 00) means a ban on any new construction and stopping of all current works. Territories nearby fall under a special control regime: building permits will be issued only after geological research and subject to special conditions.
Some houses received partial, but serious damage, but families still continue to live in them. On the facades of many buildings, the “Sold” signs have already appeared-someone is looking for a way out of the situation, someone is just hope.
