According to the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Public Works, in 2019, 83,000 state museums were visited by state museums of Cyprus. For comparison, in the same year, more than 1.2 million people visited archaeological monuments. The number of tourists in Cyprus is growing, but this does not lead to an increase in museum attendance.
On a global scale, the situation is repeated. The International Council of Museums emphasizes that small museums are at risk of closing, especially with highly specialized collections or limited digital infrastructure.
