Paphos castle and its mustachioed keeper

Paphos castle and its mustachioed keeper

What can hide the harsh fortress in the heart of Paphos? It seems that everyone saw its walls: from the Byzantines to the Ottomans. Tourists are looking for coolness and beautiful views here, but often lose sight of the main, unofficial keeper of this place. My friends and I went to intelligence and are ready to share his secret.

Stones remembering everything

Initially, the castle was independent towers interconnected by a wall. During one of the wars, the towers collapsed. The Venetians decided not to repair them. One of the towers can be seen in ruins, a little further than that which has survived to this day.

In 1592, during the Ottoman Empire, the Western Tower was restored. During this period, the castle was used as a prison.

There was a salt warehouse here with the British. In 1935, the castle became a historical monument. He retained for us a piece of the turbulent history of the island.

What is hidden inside?

Inside, the castle is quite ascetic. On the ground floor there is a central hall. He has a vaulted ceiling and small casemates. Once prisoners languished here. The atmosphere is harsh, but it is always cool here, even in the heat.

But the main treasure awaits you upstairs. You need to overcome a narrow stone staircase, and you will get to the observation deck. From the species here is breathtaking! On the one hand, an endless blue sea opens. On the other hand, the panorama of the promenade of Paphos. Taverns and walking boats are visible.

The same guide

As soon as we entered, we were met by a imposing cat. He did not just sit still. He purposefully accompanied us on the castle. As if showing the best angles for the photo. He seemed to check whether we were imbued with the spirit of this place. It seems that without his approval we would simply not be released.

The Paphos castle is about power and about history. And also about a cat that keeps his secrets. Go to pathos - be sure to say hello to it. What do you think he could tell?
