Every time a crisis knocks on our door a simple but fundamental truth is revealed in the most obvious way: nothing can work in isolation. Neither institutions nor societies. Collective responsibility and institutional preparedness in times of crisis are a prerequisite for survival and social cohesion. The year that is leaving us highlighted in a clear - and possibly painful way - that the values of humanity, in order to be meaningful and effective, need a plan, constant preparation and investment in the person himself. After all, these are options that are tested and judged in practice.
The disastrous fires in mountainous Limassol last summer constituted such a condition for the Cypriot Red Cross. Our volunteers were from the first moment in the affected areas offering care and psychological support to the people who experienced the consequences of the fire. At the same time, this experience was the starting point for a comprehensive re-evaluation and upgrade of the Organization's operational readiness for future crises. Strengthening the intercommunication of operational teams, upgrading their safety by installing GPS systems in vehicles, as well as the implementation of targeted First Aid and Psychological First Aid training emerged as key priorities.
So, the question naturally arises: what do we do the next day? Are we content with managing the emergency or should we look further ahead? The point is to put humanitarian values into practice by transforming them into meaningful interventions for the "after". Where the victims will be able to get back on their feet, regain their dignity and feel that they are not alone. That is why the Cyprus Red Cross systematically invests in the empowerment of people and communities, adopting interventions that combine immediate relief with long-term social resilience. We aim to activate skills, create opportunities and give people the means to break out of the vicious cycle of poverty and social exclusion.
In this context, the implementation of the Time Banking model, a modern social tool that enhances the mutual offer and exchange of skills, is launched. This model promotes the active participation of citizens, cultivates autonomy and turns solidarity into collective social capital. At the same time, the Counseling Center of the Cyprus Red Cross offers free individual and family counseling, strengthening mental resilience and social cohesion.
2025 is a milestone year for our Organization. The Cyprus Red Cross completes 75 years of uninterrupted presence and service in Cyprus. Seventy-five years in which humanity became an act, solidarity an institution and volunteerism a way of life. From the tragic moments of our country's history, to the modern humanitarian challenges, we remain firmly beside every person in need, without discrimination, with absolute respect for dignity.
Our institutional presence is further strengthened as our participation in the actions of the Cyprus Presidency of the EU. highlights the Agency as a reliable partner in the European humanitarian dialogue. Driven by our volunteers and founded on transparency and accountability, we look to the future with faith in the Principles of the Movement. After 75 years, our purpose remains unnegotiable: "man at the center".
